Perils and Pitfalls of Wikipedia
Last weekend I was at a district podcasting workshop, learning how to use Audacity to make a podcast. So the piece above on working with Wikipedia was created using Audacity. This type presentation is something I might use when working with teachers and preparing a workshop. The podcast could be something I’d have them listen to prior, so they have some knowledge on the subject and can be posted for anyone to refer to.
One of the neat things about this is now that I have it posted to a blog someone else can come along, nab the code that is used to embed it in my blog, and put it on their MySpace, Facebook, or other type of page. When talking about new types of literacy this type of knowledge covers a couple different facets. First, simply being able to read and understand the code is an ability I’m still learning, while many students can already read, interpret, and re-work html code in ways I still struggle with. Students do read in different ways than even I did as a kid, and will need to do more and more of this in the future. Secondly, just understanding that this is something that can be done and finding creative ways to use this information is part of what will make them socially literate in today’s world (not just tomorrow’s).
