Connected very closely to last week’s readings, one key point from these articles is the idea of collaboration. They emphasize the power of collective wisdom, which is one of the neat aspects of social bookmarking. Using lists other people have created, you can more easily narrow down a search by browsing a social bookmarking site such as Trackstar or del.icio.us. Plus, if you have people you know on these sites, the reference becomes even better since it probably comes from someone you know, trust, and/or has similar preferences & needs.
The meat of my response this week is a “track” of bookmarked sites I’ve created using trackstar. All the sites are for various office tutorials, most of them referencing MS Office, but there are also tutorials for Apple’s iwork ‘08. While a couple sites in the listing I found using a Google search, most of them were found by searching other tracks with a similar purpose. I then picked out the ones I thought were the best to create an updated list. This could now be used by people on my staff for their own use, for use with students, or for others looking for certain types of tutorials. While getting started was a little frustrating at first (there aren’t many directions once you sign up) once I got the idea it was quick and easy to find sites and make my list. This could be customized even more to guide students through a unit, or in conjunction with Google Earth.
