I’ve done my first response using Voicethread, which is kind of a cross between a blog and a podcast. I found it quite easy to use (once I got the microphone to work) but found it does require some of the same type of planning that goes into a blog, namely writing a script. I also liked the drawing feature, but was a little frustrated that the drawing would fade away as you recorded. I’d like to look at putting video and other media into this and make a more powerful presentation.

In the classroom, the simplicity of use and the variety of ways to comment make this a really good alternative to podcasting, especially for younger students. It can also be a great way to involve students in digital storytelling, with the nice feature being students’ ability to respond to the writing of others.
